Match solar fence post lights to 3.5x3.5 and 4x4 posts by measuring the actual top, then choosing the listed housing: black 3-color-changing for 4 in x 4 in, or white 3-color-changing for 3.5 in x 3.5 in or 4 in x 4 in. Why the lumber stamp is the wrong answer

Fence and deck posts are sold by nominal size. A post labeled 4x4 is often closer to 3.5 inches across the dressed top. Measuring the surface the cap will sit on is the only reliable step. Measure width and depth, not a diagonal, and not through a decorative ring that will be removed.

Vinyl sleeves on wood cores change the outside dimension. Measure the sleeve, not the core remembered from the lumber yard. A factory vinyl lid is not the solar cap. Remove it if the solar housing needs that plane, then measure again.

Black versus white is a size listing first

Black 3-color-changing lights fit 4 in x 4 in posts. White 3-color-changing lights fit 3.5 in x 3.5 in or 4 in x 4 in posts. On a mixed deck, white is the more flexible housing if some newels are true 3.5-inch tops and others are 4-inch. Black is the 4-inch line.

Housing color still matters against stain and vinyl, but a handsome black cap that rocks on a 3.5-inch top is the wrong size. Do not shim a gap with tape and call it a fit. A rocking cap is a wind and water problem.

Check the listing photos before purchase. Styles differ. The photo is the size and finish being matched to the post.

Too loose, too tight, and mixed fences
